Why Andong

Even its name means bringing peace to the east

In Andong, an (安) means peaceful and dong (東) means east. Together, they mean a town that brings harmony to the eastern region and governs it in peace.

The Nakdonggang River runs right through the middle of the city. At night, the wooden bridge over the river lights up, and the glow and the moonlight rest together on the ripples. By day it's an old city, and by night it turns romantic.

You've heard it called the city of the yangban, right?

Over the 500 years of Joseon, 290 people from this town passed the civil service exam. That's three or four times more than other towns of a similar size. Andong is called a yangban town not because of its vibe, but because of this number.

At the heart of it all is Toegye Yi Hwang. In 1561, he gave up his government post, returned to his hometown, opened a small village school where a pottery kiln once stood, and taught his students. King Jeongjo likened this town to the homeland of Confucius and Mencius, calling it Churojihyang. Dosanseowon and Byeongsanseowon became World Heritage Sites because that line of scholarship grew up right here.

But government posts weren't the only thing these yangban left behind. As the nation began to fall, Andong was the first place where a righteous army rose up, in 1894, and Andong has produced more independence patriots than any other city or county in Korea. The poet Yi Yuksa, whose literature museum sits in the mountains of Dosan-myeon, was one of them. Those who were educated took responsibility. That's the real meaning behind "the city of the yangban."

At home, holding ancestral rites and welcoming guests came first. Head families brewed soju to put on that table, and since the sea was a full day's walk away, they served salted mackerel. Today's Andong table comes straight down from that one.

Andong's four areas, divided by the river

Along the river, it splits into the west · downtown · the north

Andong is big. It makes sense when you split it into four, with the Nakdonggang River as the axis: the west · downtown · the north · the south.

Pungcheon: the river wraps all the way around the village

This is where you'll end up spending the most time in Andong. The name Hahoe (河回) comes from the way the Nakdonggang River flows east and then curves in an S around the village.

Downtown: at night, the moon rises over the river

This is where daytime Andong and nighttime Andong differ the most. Woryeonggyo is a wooden bridge across the Nakdonggang River.

Dosan: a road runs over the lake

This area heads north along Andong Lake. The drive there is lovely in itself.

Seohu and Gilan: old temples and hidden pavilions

Two places that are even better because fewer people go. Bongjeongsa Temple on Cheondeungsan Mountain in Seohu-myeon is the temple we mentioned earlier.

“Booking a place to stay and finding destinations with friends takes so much time that it's hard to actually go on a trip, but the accommodation was picked at random and the itinerary was all planned out, which was so great hehe”

“It was a destination in a good spot for people coming from different regions to meet up, but the accommodation wasn't very well kept. That said, considering the business is still in its early days, it was okay. I think I'll give Randomtrip another try once it's grown a bit more”
