Why Seosan

A land blessed with good fortune, starting with its name

In Seosan, seo (瑞) means auspicious and san (山) means mountain. Together, they mean a land full of signs that good things are coming.

And this land really has been bountiful for a long time. Wide tidal flats open up to the west and fertile fields stretch inland, so what comes from the sea and what comes from the land end up on the same table. There's a reason people say Seosan folks are generous.

Seosan's lines are mostly soft. There are no sharp peaks, just gently rolling hills. Drive with the windows down and rice paddies, ranches and sea take turns in no particular order. As you follow those curves, the tension in your shoulders melts away on its own.

Seosan is a land with a gentle face

In 1959, scholars from the Buyeo Museum had been combing the valleys of Unsan-myeon for days. They'd heard there was a Buddha statue near an old temple site, but no matter how hard they looked, they couldn't find it. When they asked a passing woodcutter, this is what he said: "Ain't seen no Buddha or pagoda, but if you go up to that In-bawi rock, there's a mountain spirit up there smilin' real bright."

That mountain spirit is the Rock-Carved Buddha Triad. It's a Buddha that the people of Baekje carved into a cliff face 1,400 years ago, and all that time the locals knew it as a smiling mountain spirit. No wonder: it isn't a stern face looking down on you, but one with narrowed eyes and upturned lips. It became a national treasure 3 years after it was found, and archaeologist Dr. Kim Won-yong named this face the Smile of Baekje. Its expression shifts a little with the angle of the light, gentle in the morning and crisp at midday.

Seosan's four areas, with downtown in the middle

With downtown in the middle, it splits into the mountain side and the sea side

Seosan makes sense when you split it into three: the mountains to the east · the tidal flats to the southwest · the sea to the north. Downtown Seosan sits in the middle.

Unsan: a 1,400-year-old smile in the rock

This is where Seosan's oldest treasures gather. The Rock-Carved Buddha Triad is the face we told you about earlier.

Haemi: smiles and sorrow side by side within the walls

A fortress built in 1491 under King Seongjong of Joseon. Its 8 km stone wall survives almost intact.

Ganwoldo: twice a day, the sea opens a path

This is where the sun sets most beautifully in Seosan. Ganwolam is a small hermitage that becomes an island when the tide comes in and a path when the tide goes out.

Daesan and Samgilpo: sashimi sliced fresh right on the boat

The northern tip of Seosan. With fewer people around, the sea feels wider here.

“A trip with no regrets, just fun!! Whenever I traveled with friends, we had to go through the hassle of making plans, but this time, using Randomtrip for the first time, I didn't have to struggle with planning at all. And thanks to that one word, 'random,' I got this unusual feeling of half excitement, half worry right up to the day of the trip, which made it really fun”

“It was a fresh experience at a destination I never would have thought of! I felt it from start to finish, but you could really tell how much care went into even the smallest details! I've been on lots of trips, but I think this is one I'll never forget! I think I'll use it again and again! Planning our itinerary and recommending all the cafés, restaurants and places to see nearby felt really thoughtful, and I was truly moved by the CEO's message on the paper you gave us…”
