Donghae Travel: Places to Visit, 1-Night 2-Day Itinerary and City Stories
A city with stories that go beyond the sea. True to its name, it's the first to greet the red sunrise, and it holds the wide blue sea in its arms. But Donghae's real charm is that it doesn't stop at the sea.

Why Donghae
Even its name holds a deep shade of blue
True to its name, it's the first to greet the red sunrise, and it holds the wide blue sea in its arms. But Donghae's real charm is that it doesn't stop at the sea.
The mighty Baekdudaegan mountain range runs right up to the sea, leaving only a narrow gap between the mountains and the water. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves in the morning, then dipping your feet in a valley stream deep in lush greenery at lunch. Places where you can enjoy the energy of a rough sea and the stillness of deep mountains all in a single day are rarer than you'd think.
Like the sunrise pushing back the dark, there's no better place to wash away the weight of everyday life.
Where hard sweat once fell, now a gentle pause
Behind the relaxed scenery Donghae has today lies the fierce sweat of its past.
Mukho Port started as a small port in 1936, became an international trade port in 1941, and greatly expanded its piers and breakwaters in 1976, shipping coal nonstop, while in Samhwa-dong to the west, mountains were cut away for a full 40 years to make cement.
So much of the scenery you'll meet in Donghae wasn't shaped by nature alone. It's what bloomed where hard labor ended. The bustling port became a quiet walking trail, the dried-up abandoned mine became an emerald lake, and the shabby hillside alleys were reborn as a friendly mural village.
A city that once raced breathlessly, endlessly digging things up and shipping them out, now draws people in and soothes their tired hearts.
Something new at every step: Donghae's five areas
14km in every direction: mountains and sea in the palm of your hand
Donghae is a smaller city than you'd think. Its five main areas are packed close together within 14km in every direction.
Mukho: deep longing soaked into every steep alley
When Mukho Port was booming, fishermen carried heavy fish crates up these steep slopes. Seawater dripping from the crates kept the dirt path as muddy as a rice paddy, so people called this place Nongol.
Chuam: facing the grandeur of the national anthem's opening line
Watching fierce waves break white against sharp rock formations that seem to pierce the sky gives you a sense of awe on a whole different level from photos. The lone Chotdaebawi (Candlestick Rock) was originally three pillars, but about a hundred years ago lightning struck and broke two of them, leaving the solitary shape you see today.
Mureung: where the time of immortals meets the time of people
Wrapped snugly by Dutasan and Cheongoksan mountains, Mureung Valley holds a mysterious legend that, just as its name suggests, immortals once wandered here. Samhwasa Temple, which has stood for 1,300 years, quietly keeps its place with the clear sound of the deep valley's water as its companion.
Cheongok and Mangsang: spots you'd regret passing by
Get swept up by the dazzling sea and valleys and it's easy to miss some precious places. One of them is Cheongok Golden Bat Cave.

Kim*cheol · Solo · 2026.06 · Traveled with Randomtrip“For 33 years, I didn't even know 'Donghae' was an independent city, 'Donghae-si', like Pohang or Uljin. I thought it was just a seaside neighborhood on the East Sea. I found out for the first time through this Randomtrip, and the sea was really clean and every place I went was new and great!…”
